What is this "Work Cheque" anyway?
The Club runs a variety of events throughout the season including bonspiels, OCA competitions, and fundraisers, all of which depend on volunteer assistance from the membership to be successful.
The concept of the work cheque is quite simple. It's how we encourage our members to "pitch in" and help with the club's events. Since "many hands make for light work", we have found the work cheque to be the fairest, most reasonable way of making sure that each event has enough "hands". As long as you fulfill your minimum work duty requirements, your work cheque will never be cashed, and the only cost to you will be a few hours of your time.
You always have a choice of when you will work. At the beginning of curling season, a "work sheet" is posted in the lounge. It contains a grid of events and times, with spaces for names to be entered. You can choose shifts in the bar or in the kitchen at times that suit your schedule, and each shift you complete counts as a single "work credit". Shifts are available mostly on weekends, but some are also available for weekday events. They generally coincide with bonspiels or OCA events, and involve either bartending or assisting with food preparation. Each shift lasts about three hours, so your time commitment is minimal.
Minimum Work Duty Requirements
All club members are expected to earn at least two work credits during the curling season. You can choose to take two kitchen shifts, two bar shifts, or one of each.
The work cheque is required upon registration. It should be in the amount of $100, and post-dated to February 1st. Remember: this cheque is only cashed if you did not fulfill your work duty obligations by the end of the season.
Please note that to work in the bar, you must have Smart Serve certification.
A few short hours of your time helps the club a great deal, and keeps your membership fees affordable!
